2021 Smolt Footage
Taken during the River Teign Restoration Project by Nick Baker, these are a mixture of young Salmon and Sea Trout Smolts congregating in a shoal in a leat close to Chagford. Having spent a couple of years in the river, they now undergo some big changes in their appearance, physiology and behaviour a process called Smoltification - before heading downstream and out to sea, to feed up and put on weight before they return to spawn as adults. Leats can be a problem for fish of this age as they can get delayed, trapped and are vulnerable to predation.
